ILLEGAL immigrants locked down at the KLIA Immigration detention centre following the death of an inmate from Influenza A (H1N1) are being sent to three other immigration detention centres.
The depot has also stopped accepting detainees. KLIA Immigration Depot commandant Shainurin Shaari said
the three detention centres are at Semenyih in Selangor, Lenggeng in Negri Sembilan and Machap Umboo in Malacca. He said Immigration Department officers would decide where to send the detainees.
“Until the District Health Department gives us the green light, we will not accept new inmates,” Shainurin said, adding that he expects the situation to last for the next two weeks.
“Even after we reopen, we will screen every new detainee brought in for H1N1. We want to prevent the spread of the virus in the detention centre.”
The KLIA depot in Sepang was locked down on Tuesday after it was confirmed that Togolese inmate Malou-Ouro Dramane’s death last Friday was due to H1N1.
Deportation activities at the depot have since come to a halt. Officials from the Sepang Health Department screened the remaining 950 detainees and 40 Immigration staff for the influenza and the result showed that none was infected. - Malay Mail.
