Ministry seeks to raise cost of hiring foreigners

KUALA LUMPUR: The Human Resources Ministry is devising a system to raise the cost of employing foreign workers in efforts to reduce the foreign work force in the country.

Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam said the Government wanted to limit the recruitment of foreign workers to 1.5 million in three years as proposed by the Cabinet Commit­tee on Foreign Workers laboratory and changes would be made to the recruitment system to achieve this.

By increasing the recruitment costs, the Government hoped to resolve the issue of unskilled foreign workers with very low pay, he said after presenting certificates to graduates of the Beaubelle Cosmetology Management Academy here yesterday. - The Star
